JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a motivated and environmentally passionate Summer Student to join our team as an Ecological Technician. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental conservation, invasive species management, and community engagement along the Lake Huron North region. The Field Assistant will work closely with our Project Coordinator to support ongoing conservation projects and
initiatives.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Invasive Species Management
• Utilize backpack sprayers to manage invasive Phragmites populations in targeted areas.
• Organize and lead volunteer events, including Himalayan Balsam pulls, to promote community involvement in invasive species control.
• Conduct field mapping and data collection of invasive Phragmites populations using GIS tools and mobile mapping applications.
Project Support
• Assist in the development and implementation of conservation initiatives with partner organizations, including but not limited to:
• Constructing and installing fishing line recycling stations.
• Monitoring and reporting on Hemlock Woolly Adelgid and other environmental concerns within the Lake Huron North region.
• Maintain accurate and detailed field notes, data records, and volunteer engagement logs.
Community Engagement
• Collaborate with community members and stakeholders to raise awareness about invasive species and their impact on local ecosystems.
• Provide information and education during volunteer events and outreach activities.
General Field Work
• Assist with general field operations, including equipment maintenance, site preparation, and clean-up.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental best practices during field activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
• High School Diploma
• The ideal candidate would be attending a post secondary institution or has just graduated
ELIGIBILITY FOR CANADA SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM
In order to be eligible, participants must:
• Be between 15-30 years of age, at the start of the funded position.
• Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or someone to whom Refugee Status has been granted/conferred.
• Have a valid SIN
International students, and those who are here in Canada on a work, youth, or visitor visa/permit are not eligible
for the program.
