Integrated Geomatics Service Project (IGS) (1999-Present)

The City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Sault Ste. Marie have implemented an enterprise wide municipal and utilities GIS system. The conceptual design, development, implementation and support of this GIS system was contracted out to the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, which is a not-for-profit organization established in 1999 in Sault Ste. Marie to diversify the local economy.

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre also subcontracted to EDS Canada, ESRI Canada and J.D. Barnes Limited. Support for the implementation of the GIS was provided from the Mayor of Sault Ste. Marie and President of the PUC through to all staff, in an effort to create a shared enterprise GIS solution that would produce cost savings for both organizations. This GIS system is being implemented as a tool for all municipal and PUC staff.

ESRI Canada has stated that the Sault Ste. Marie municipal and PUC GIS system is the most comprehensive in all of Canada, possibly North America. Nearly every feature that exists within reality in the community has been modeled and captured within the GIS.
