Hospital Watch Live (2008-2009)
The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC), in partnership with Infonaut Inc., is currently developing a geospatial hospital information system, which is being called Hospital Watch Live. The product leverages the experience and knowledge gained during SSMIC’s GIS mapping and analysis of the serious C. difficile outbreak in Sault Ste. Marie in 2006/2007. This system will allow access granted healthcare staff the ability to search for the exact location of health facility assets and patients in near real-time (within the healthcare facility). Search results will be generated to graphically depict the location of assets within the real world coordinates of the hospital.

The system will also be able to graphically depict assets and patients over space and time as they are moved between wards, rooms and/or beds. This ensures historical movement throughout the hospital will be captured.

Hospital Watch Live matches statistical surveillance data to the spatial techniques which bring that data to life. Most of the critical, essential information in disease monitoring and healthcare emergencies have a geographic component. Hospital Watch Live merges those geographies with near real-time data. The resulting intuitive, information-rich interface quickly disseminates that data to those who need to know.

The solution integrates the power of GIS with tracking technologies including sonar and/or RFID. The system will be piloted at the Sault Area Hospital. The emphasis of the development and pilot is infection control.
