Sault Ste. Marie Bear Mapping (2004-2008)

Client: Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and OMNR

This project started in 2004 when the CGC conducted GIS mapping illustrating all the reported bear calls in the area to support SSM Police and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) information sessions about nuisance bears. In 2005, the SSM Police mapped reported bear sightings again to determine if their education campaigns were successful. Since 2006 the project has been supported by OMNR. The data has been provided at the address level for analysis as many bear sightings occur in rural route postal code areas, thus postal code information cannot yield a meaningful result. Areas identified in this process will receive community awareness bear education. This data is displayed on the public Community GIS Portal.
