Sault Ste. Marie Public Library Patron Mapping (2007 and 2014)

Client: Sault Ste. Marie Public Library

The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library was interested in learning about the demographics of their patrons in Sault Ste. Marie and what types of materials appeal to them. The Library provided data on the location of their patrons, as well as a snapshot of what materials were in circulation. From this data, a map was created to show the library patrons as a percent of total population. A series of maps were also produced illustrating the actual library usage per dissemination area. The difference between the number of books borrowed and the number of patrons per dissemination area was depicted in the first map of the series. Population data was also included to compare the library usage with the population in that Dissemination Area. Additional maps were created; one showing the population per Dissemination Area and another showing the difference between the number of books borrowed and the number of library patrons. In addition to the maps already created, the Community Geomatics Centre also be included an analysis of the types of material borrowed, as well as patron demographics as a whole, and for each individual library branch. The analysis of material borrowed showed the dominant types of library materials borrowed per dissemination area. The patron demographic maps illustrated the age of patrons using each individual branch of the library and for the city as a whole. The patron demographic maps were also broken up into three categories; Child Memberships, Adult Memberships and Senior Memberships.
