Waterloo Wellington Community Access Centre (2009)

Partners: Waterloo Wellington Community Care Access Centre, Grand River Hospital and Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (WWLHIN)

Leveraging GIS to Better Understand and Address ED/ALC Issues in the Waterloo Wellington Region (2009)

The CGC was approached by the project sponsor, the Waterloo Wellington Community Care Access Centre (WWCCAC) to assist with a collaborative project between the WWCCAC, Grand River Hospital (GRH) and the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (WWLHIN) to investigate the use of GIS to assist with the Emergency Department/Alternate Level of Care (ED/ALC) issues presenting the region and the province. WWCCAC client data was cross-referenced with ED data from GRH, as well as Statistics Canada demographic data to enlighten all the stakeholders with the current situation. Information was reviewed at varying geographic levels, including the LHIN, Census Subdivision, Census Tract, and Dissemination Areas to determine what the geographic representation was for those utilizing either the WWCCAC or GRH. Many maps and corresponding tables/graphs were generated illustrating the data with the intent that this project would be viewed as Phase 1 where future Phases would encompass more hospitals thus obtaining a better understanding of the WWLHIN.
