On Wednesday June 15, 2011 the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre hosted the Innovation Information Forum at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre.

This half-day forum covered several important programs of interest to entrepreneurs and innovators that are available through the Government of Canada. Speakers from several federal departments included: Public Works and Government Services Canada; National Research Council of Canada (NRC-IRAP); Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC); Canada Revenue Agency and FedNor.

Jeff Quipp is founder and CEO of Search Engine People Inc. Jeff has been engaged in the search industry for more than a decade, and was one of the first people in Canada to recognize the Internet as an emerging marketing channel.

Before launching Search Engine People, Jeff spent time within the Bell group of companies managing and launching North America's first speech recognition enabled portal. Jeff has also earned undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Economics, and an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University.

A speaker at numerous search marketing and social media conferences, his passion lies in understanding the impact of various types of content on social media, SEO, and visitor behavior.

Very active in most social media circles, Jeff blogs frequently at SearchEnginePeople.com/blog, writes for Search Engine Watch and the Search Marketing Standard, is a moderator for the search industry's social media site Sphinn.com, and sits on the Search Committee of the IAB Canada. The Business of Cleantech: Opportunities, Innovation and Funding

This day-long workshop took place on March 31, 2010 at the Delta Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront Hotel and Conference Centre. Presentations were made by 10 expert speakers from both within the Clean Tech field and from organizations that fund and support Clean Tech initiatives. The presenters were: Guy Dauncey, BC Sustainable Energy Association; James Sbrolla, Ontario Centre for Environmental Technology Advancement (OCETA); Aime Dimatteo, Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation; Nicholas Parker, Cleantech Group; Jim Deluzio, Brookfield Power; Gordon Quaiattini, Canadian Renewable Fuels Association; Glen Martin, Pod Generating; Pere Soria, Heliene; Nathaniel Bullard, Bloomberg New Energy Finance; and Christopher Flavin, Worldwatch Institute. Topics included: the post-carbon future, trends in clean tech investing, Brookfield Power's Prince wind farm, Pod Generating's forthcoming solar farm in Sault Ste. Marie, Heliene's forthcoming manufacturing facility in Sault Ste. Marie, and low-carbon energy and the race for global competitiveness.



Entrepreneurial Opportunities in the Emerging Bio-Economy

This full day workshop was held on October 30, 2009 at the Quality Inn with presentations by 7 industry professionals on entrepreneurial opportunities in the emerging bio-economy.  The speakers were: Dr. Gregory M. Zimmerman, Chair, Biological Sciences, LSSU; John Baker, president and CEO, Stonehedge Bio-Resources; Jasmin Hofer, CEO, Energrow Inc.; Chris Case, facility manager, Pictured Rocks National Landscape; Toby Rhue, forest fleet manager, Hiawatha National Forest; Mark Kean, president, Mikro-Tek; and Todd Parker, associate, Delta Institute.  Topics included: carbon trading, farm oil processing for feed, fuel and freedom, sustainable is attainable at Pictured Rocks National lakeshore, industrial hemp: a multi-purpose biomass crop and using reed canary grass as a feedstock for making fuel pellets.


Structures for Success: Specialized Legal & Finance Strategies

Structures for Success featured guest speakers Jay A. Lefton, senior partner from Ogilvy Renault LLP's and Eric Klein, partner from Farber Financial Group; both from Toronto.  The workshop took place on Tuesday September 15, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Great Northern Hotel & Conference Centre.

Lefton and Klein spoke on a variety of topics meant to help businesses avoid common and often costly issues related to law and finance.


Building Business on a Budget: How to use Social Media to save your marketing dollars

Guest speaker Amber MacArthur made a presentation on “How to Use Social media to Save your Marketing Dollars” at the half day workshop on Tuesday June 23, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Waterfront Inn and Conference Centre.

How can companies make the most of their marketing budgets during the economic downturn? Amber MacArthur took an instructive look at how social media is perfectly suited to help you gain customers in both good times and, especially, bad. While most companies do some advertising online, many are stuck with costly, ineffective Web 1.0 models. At the forefront of Web 2.0, MacArthur showed how to create thriving online communities and launch frugal, but complete and uncompromised, marketing initiatives that get results. With clarity, long-term strategic insight and case studies, she dove into the tools needed for companies to start building, saving -- and winning.

Software Development Workshop

To advance IT focused economic development in Northern Ontario, SSMIC and NRC-IRAP partnered to deliver a workshop for entrepreneurs involved in developing software applications. The Software Development workshop took place on March 16, 2009 at Algoma's Water Tower Inn with the goal of assisting small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) by demonstrating a variety of methods and best practices for software development and quality assurance/testing. Each of these topics was explored individually to make them more understandable and relevant for everyday business use.

The Challenges of Starting a Video Game Studio

Richard Hilmer of Pseudo Interactive visits Algoma U!

Richard Hilmer was the feature presenter at The Challenges of Starting a Video Game Studio workshop on March 13, 2009.   Richard is a technical entrepreneur seasoned in many facets of business creation, software development, team building, project management and financing, having accumulated over 12 years of experience in the videogame industry. As a founder and President at Pseudo Interactive, he grew the company to over sixty developers and led teams that released games on the Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while working with industry giants such as Electronic Arts, SEGA, Intel, and Microsoft. Richard is also experienced with tax programs such as the SRED credit, and government organizations such as the OMDC, that assist interactive media companies.


Finding Funding Workshop Series

The Finding Funding Workshop series took place on February 19 and February 20, 2009 at Algoma's Water Tower Inn. It was hosted by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, science enterprise Algoma and NRC-IRAP. Day 1 featured Dianne Buckner from CBC's Dragons' Den, Jim Noble, regional coordinator, NOEG and Brad Simard, local management consultant. Day 2 featured renowned business expert Donald Cooper, formerly from Cooper Canada Ltd., and 2 funding panels featuring representatives from banks, private and governmental funding agencies.

The Technology Transfer Process

The Technology Transfer Process workshop took place on January 14, 2009 at Algoma’s Water Tower Inn. The workshop was held by SSMIC, seA and IRAP and took SMEs, scientists/researchers and entrepreneurs through the technology transfer process in a user friendly way. Renowned experts in the field such as Marcel Mongeon, Joe Meating, Dr. Edward Mupondwa and others spoke about accessing, licensing and marketing new technologies while offering their own valuable expertise and advice from the field.




Competitive Market Intelligence Workshop

On June 18, 2008 the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre presented a half day workshop on Competitive Market Intelligence. To stay competitive and to identify profitable opportunities, small and medium sized businesses must have a broad awareness of what their competition is doing (Competitive Intelligence, CI). At the same time, they must also have an understanding of market conditions and direction to ensure they have the correct ‘4P’s’: product, pricing, promotion and place to attract clients (Market Intelligence, MI).

Led by two Toronto-based industry experts, the workshop revealed insights into successful CI and MI strategies. Speakers David Lithwick and Donald Cooper presented on topics like market intelligence, consultancy, competitive intelligence (CI), competitor benchmarking and mystery shopping.



Entrepreneurial Excellence: Business Bootcamp (E2B2)


On March 27, 2008, the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, in partnership with Enterprise Centre Sault Ste. Marie presented a workshop aimed at new and existing business in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma Region.

The event served to inspire and showcase success stories of entrepreneurs and what steps need to be taken to find success in small business.



Top Tech Tools to Increase Profits & Drive Business Growth

In today's competitive global economy business survival and growth hinges on the use of innovative information and communication technology (ICT). The Sault Ste. Marie Innovaiton Centre hosted a Business Technology Workshop on February 26, 2008 to showcase the planning, marketing, resource management and commerce advantages using today's online tools. This event targeted non-IT savvy, small and medium size business owners interested in gaining awareness of the many benefits of using information technology. The workshop presents a rare opportunity for non-IT business owners and new start-up companies exposure to some of the exciting new technology that can propel their company into the future.
