Are You Interested in Supporting Algoma’s Youth?

Sault Ste. Marie (November 29, 2017) - John McNutt President & CEO of Junior Achievement Peterborough, Lakeland and Muskoka (JA-PLM) along with the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre and its YouLaunch division are pleased to announce that JA-PLM programming will continue for another year in the Algoma region.

Junior Achievement provides students with a variety of in-class experiences surrounding financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness skills with the help of local business volunteers. Each program helps prepare students for the challenges of competing in a global economy and creating tools for career success.

Three in-class programs will be offered in the region, including:

  • Dollars with Sense: Providing students in Grades 7-10 with the tools needed to make smart financial decisions, live debt-free and become savvy investors by learning money management skills.
  • Economics for Success: Providing students in Grades 8-10 with a closer look at what they need to succeed in today’s workforce, advantages to staying in school, and interactive tools to help identify student interests and skills to link with possible career choices.
  • Be Entrepreneurial: Providing students in Grades 9-12 with an opportunity to explore business ownership and learn the skills needed to start and run a small business. Throughout this programming students will identify a product or service they are interested in developing and work through related business activities.

In addition to the above programs, two new programs will be offered in 2018 including:

  • Company Program: Providing students in Grades 9-12 with the opportunity to launch and run their own small enterprise over a four-month period, helping create a variety of employable skills for youth.
  • World of Choices: A one day event for students in Grades 10-12 to meet with a variety of career mentors and ask questions, giving students valuable information about their future career choices.

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre has been providing a variety of entrepreneurial skill building opportunities since 2015 with elementary, secondary and post-secondary students through its YouLaunch program. “We are thrilled to announce this renewed partnership and to have the ability to bring one of Canada’s largest youth business education organizations to Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma region,” said John Prgomet, Business Development Manager with the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre. “Our initial pilot in 2016 was highly successful and we are looking forward to providing youth with the skills to succeed in their career choices.”

The success of JA-PLM programming depends on community volunteers interested in helping support youth in the community. YouLaunch is currently seeking volunteers from the business community around Algoma who are dedicated, passionate, talented, and inspiring. Individuals who meet the requirements to become a JA volunteer through our selection process will be provided with:

  • A training session on program delivery per program
  • All classroom materials
  • Access to the online portal for support and collaboration with other volunteers
  • A form for a Police Records Check (PRC), including a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS)
