Innovation Centre, Sault College continue to team up

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre is continuing to offer part-time employment opportunities to second-year students in Sault College's Computer Programming.


Among the interested applicants, selected students will be eligible to work eight hours per week during their time with Sault College.


Innovation Centre Executive Director Peter Bruijins said the partnership with Sault College helps students develop their skills while building the technology community locally.


“We want to continue to help develop skills in the IT sector in the Algoma region and partnering with Computer Programming students allows us to help build a community of technology professionals,” Bruijns said. “Our Acorn Information Solutions division provides real world experience for students, making them more desirable in the job market, and we get the opportunity to build up the network of IT professionals though this partnership.”


For the students, the partnership takes on added importance as well.


“Our long-standing partnership with the Innovation Centre is incredibly important to us and our students,” said Dan Kachur, professor, Information Technology Programs. “This initiative will help our students gain real-world experience while also building relationships with industry professionals. We believe that this partnership will continue to benefit our students, our community, and the IT industry for years to come. We are grateful for the ongoing support from the Innovation Centre."


The initiative began in 2019.


The Innovation Centre also supports Sault College's IT programming thorugh it's IT Success Scholarship, which is available to students enrolled in their first year of an Information Technology studies program at the College and will be awarded to three local students annually. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 and is renewable based on maintaining a minimum GPA.

Northern Ontario Value-Added Agriculture (NOVA) Program Launches

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) has launched the Northern Ontario Value-Added Agriculture (NOVA) Program to empower agri-food entrepreneurs across Northern Ontario to develop new food products. By offering workshops, training sessions, networking events, and a mentorship program, NOVA aims to equip Northern entrepreneurs with the essential skills and knowledge needed for long-term business growth and sustainability. Supported by $42,080 in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, NOVA will address the critical need for professional development in the agri-food sector. It focuses on enhancing entrepreneurial skills, improving safety and risk management practices, and providing strategies to expand market presence at home and abroad. “The agri-food promise and potential of Northern Ontario is immense, and our government will continue to work with Northern partners like the SSMIC to help seize it,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “NOVA will help unlock more of the huge untapped entrepreneurial energy and ambition of Northern agri-food entrepreneurs to build strong local businesses, create good-paying jobs and strengthen Northern Ontario’s economy.” Program goals include strengthened business capabilities, job creation, and increased economic activity, leading to a more vibrant and sustainable agri-food sector in Northern Ontario. By fostering public engagement with agriculture and local food, NOVA will also contribute to rural development and enhanced community well-being.
