Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre to Support Student Learning at Sault College

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON February 10, 2022) – Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) is supporting student learning at Sault College by establishing the SSM Innovation Centre IT Success Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students enrolled in their first year of an Information Technology studies program at the College and will be awarded to three local students annually. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 and is renewable based on maintaining a minimum GPA.


SSMIC understands the value and importance of the Algoma region supporting local people in pursuing a career in the digital economy. This scholarship is one of the ways SSMIC can not only support our community, but also this critical, in-demand industry and the career possibilities it provides right in the Algoma region.


“Developing talent within our community is a necessity for our economy to thrive. The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre is committed to furthering the skills needed to support IT, technology and science-based sectors in Algoma. This scholarship program not only builds awareness in the program options at Sault College, but also aims to open doors for those wanting to benefit from the in-demand jobs in the IT sector,” said Peter Bruijns, Executive Director, SSMIC.


“The growth in IT jobs is outpacing the number of IT graduates across the country. SSMIC is committed to developing interest in IT careers and providing learning environments that grow a regional talent pool,” added Paul Beach, General Manager of Acorn Information Solutions.


“Sault College is honoured to add the SSM Innovation Centre IT Success Scholarship to its comprehensive Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards (SBA) program. Scholarships, such as this, complement our overall goal of increasing access to higher education and our commitment to student success,” said Dr. Ron Common, President, Sault College.


“IT is an in-demand field and our programming supports the employment needs in this critical area. We are grateful that SSMIC recognizes the value in our programming and has chosen to further assist students who want to pursue a meaningful career in this field,” added Dan Kachur, Professor at Sault College.

Northern Ontario Value-Added Agriculture (NOVA) Program Launches

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) has launched the Northern Ontario Value-Added Agriculture (NOVA) Program to empower agri-food entrepreneurs across Northern Ontario to develop new food products. By offering workshops, training sessions, networking events, and a mentorship program, NOVA aims to equip Northern entrepreneurs with the essential skills and knowledge needed for long-term business growth and sustainability. Supported by $42,080 in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, NOVA will address the critical need for professional development in the agri-food sector. It focuses on enhancing entrepreneurial skills, improving safety and risk management practices, and providing strategies to expand market presence at home and abroad. “The agri-food promise and potential of Northern Ontario is immense, and our government will continue to work with Northern partners like the SSMIC to help seize it,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “NOVA will help unlock more of the huge untapped entrepreneurial energy and ambition of Northern agri-food entrepreneurs to build strong local businesses, create good-paying jobs and strengthen Northern Ontario’s economy.” Program goals include strengthened business capabilities, job creation, and increased economic activity, leading to a more vibrant and sustainable agri-food sector in Northern Ontario. By fostering public engagement with agriculture and local food, NOVA will also contribute to rural development and enhanced community well-being.
